Center for Information Technology Integration
CITI conducts applied research and development in emerging information technologies in partnership with corporate and government sponsors. CITI offers technical conferences, briefings, and courses on current projects as well as on a variety of general technology topics, including open systems and client/server computing.

Division of Research Development and Administration
The industrial sponsors section of DRDA provides businesses with information about U of M services, personnel and facilities for sponsored activities. In addition, DRDA representatives provide project development and contract negotiation and administration for U-M faculty members involved in projects funded by industrial organizations.

Engineering Office of Corporate Relations
The office provides information and direction for small businesses trying to establish a relationship with the College of Engineering through the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research. Research partnerships can be established with the students and faculty from the College of Engineering. Small businesses can become active in student organizations.

Great Lakes Trade Adjustment Assistance Center
This center assists manufacturing firms in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana that have been adversely affected by import competition. It also works with eligible firms to analyze critical operations, develop a strategic adjustment plan for the firm, and help implement the plan. The center pays 75% of the cost of the analysis and plan and about 50% of implementation costs.

Technology Management Office
Provides legal and business counsel to faculty and staff members relating to University generated intellectual properties, including patents, know-how, and software. Negotiates appropriate business arrangements, such as licensing or assisting with the formation of start-up companies, to help develop and market University generated intellectual properties. Publishes quarterly newsletter, Disclosure, featuring topics relevant to businesses such as technologies available for licensing, recently issued patents, and successful licensing arrangements.

Medical School Technology Transfer and Corporate Research
This office is the main contact for businesses and other external organizations interested in commercialization of biomedical technologies developed within the U of M Medical School. The office assists medical school investigators with invention disclosures and other intellectual property matters and works in cooperation with the U of M Technology Management Office and other U of M offices.

Office for Research on Industrial Facilities
ORIF works to revitalize closed or abandoned manufacturing facilities by returning them to economically beneficial use. Faculty from the College of Engineering, School of Architecture, Urban Planning and other university departments form teams to assess facilities and recommend their best use. ORIF is interested in preventing closure of facilities by identifying those at risk of closure and initiating intervention activities to ensure viability.

Office of Technology Transfer
A service unit of the College of Engineering designed to foster explanation of existing companies and creation of new ones to promote growth and diversification of the Michigan economy. The office oversees the Industrial Development Division, Industry Liaison and Assistance Office, and Innovation Center.

Industrial Development Division (IDD)
An entrepreneurial program that focuses on technologies emerging from laboratories in the College of Engineering. Works in cooperation with the U-M Office of Intellectual Property on disclosures, patents and licenses. Also provides some direction to start-up companies.

U-M Transportation Research Institute
UMTRI provides a setting where its faculty, staff, and students collaborate to accomplish multidisciplinary transportation research, generating new basic knowledge and providing research training. Broad areas of research include crash-data collection and traffic-safety analysis, bioengineering, human factors, mechanical engineering, psychology, economics, public policy, and marine systems. In addition, numerous multidisciplinary research programs are currently being conducted with other units of the University of Michigan. UMTRI’s collaborations also extend beyond the University to include working with state and federal agencies, urban and regional planners, labor and industrial-relations groups, and corporate sponsors.

Industrial Affiliate Programs and Research Partnerships
Businesses pay annual membership fees to support research of interest to them and gain accelerated access to results. Many departments at the University of Michigan have Industrial Affiliate Programs. Research Administration tracks the Affiliate Programs and will be able to fit a business’ needs with the right department for research partnership.
